Open Philanthropy Course Development Grants – Application Form

Applications are open until further notice and will be assessed on a rolling basis.

A description of the program is available here.

Please contact coursedevelopmentgrants@openphilanthropy.org with any questions.

By default, we will share your responses with Open Philanthropy staff and, in some cases, a select number of external advisors. If you would like to keep your responses confidential to Open Philanthropy staff only, please specify this in the relevant form field below.

The form should auto-save any information you enter, so if you aren't able to complete it in one session, you should be able to fill in parts of it and return to it at a later point (as long as you are using the same device). You will receive a copy of your responses via email.

When sharing Google Docs or Sheets, please grant comment access to cb-funding@openphilanthropy.org to facilitate efficient follow-up communication.

If you are submitting a joint application, please designate a primary contact for the purposes of this application and complete only one (joint) application form.

This field is asking about the number of faculty members who are planning to collaborate on/are seeking funding for the development of the course. If you are looking to develop the course on your own (i.e. not as part of a team of several faculty members), please tick "individual application," even if you are planning to rely on the help of teaching/research assistants.

This should detail the expenses for which you are requesting support.

If arriving at exact figures for potential indirect costs isn't straightforward (e.g. if this would require significant back-and-forth with university administrators), it's fine for you to use rough estimates at this stage. Note that per our general policy on indirect costs for grants to universities, indirect costs may not exceed 10% of total direct costs: https://www.openphilanthropy.org/indirect-costs-policy.

Please specify the soonest date such that finding out later than this would cause you *significant* inconvenience or possibly even interfere with you pursuing the proposed course development at all.

Note that we may not be able to meet some applicants' stated hard deadlines, and we're generally unlikely to be able to accommodate requested turnaround times of less than 2 weeks, except in exceptional circumstances.

Please note that this only applies to the funding decision, not the payout of funds.
